Luke 6:46 – 49

Highlighting – “As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” (v.47 – 48)

In this passage we see the benefit of following Christ. We prove to truly be God’s children when we follow His commands and love one another (1 John 3:23 – 24). Additionally, true evidence of being a child of God is whether we remain in the teaching of Jesus Christ (2 John 1:9). It’s not a matter of simply coming to Sunday services and being in His presence for a couple of hours, listening to the sermon, then going home and forgetting about Him until the next Sunday. But we should intentionally participate in the service, and as the church in Berea, search the Word and study to ensure the message we heard is the truth (Acts 17:10-15). The less we read the Word, the more susceptible we are to accept false teaching/doctrine as truth and be easily swayed. The more we read the Bible and commune with Him in prayer, the more revelation God will give us and less likely a false prophet can fool us.

How do you build your foundation on rock? It begins with reading and studying the Word of God, which is our Guide to living an extraordinary life in Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:2-3). Then building relationship with Him through constant prayer and devotion – finding a time in the day to dedicate entirely to God. It shouldn’t be too much to ask to give the Author of time an hour in our day, right? I mean, that still gives you 23 hours to work with…

When we know what God expects of us as His children, we must obey what He says. James exhorts us to not only be hearers, but also doers of the Word and not deceive ourselves by our lack of obedience to God (James 1:22-23). He goes even further to say that those who hear the Word and intentionally follow His commands are blessed (v. 25). Scripture tells us how prosperous we are when we meditate on His Word day and night (Psalm 1:2-3), not only will it keep us out of unnecessary trouble, but the Word will help us endure trials at the onset of them and stand firm until the day of Christ’s return.

The deeper the root, the stronger the foundation.

Dear Father, help me to stay connected to my life source, Jesus Christ. Help me to be obedient to Your Word as I continue to build my relationship with You. I want to be a true disciple of Christ in word and in my behavior. May Your Word be hidden within me, written on the tablets of my heart so I am constantly reminded of Your promises. May others testify that I’m a Christian by the way that I live. In Jesus name I pray, amen!
