You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. (Genesis 50:20)
These words right here are EVERYTHING. Joseph was talking to his brothers and telling them to not be afraid of him as what they thought they were doing in an attempt to harm him, was part of God’s plan. Additionally, it turned out to be for the good of all people in Egypt and the surrounding areas. God in His sovereignty knew his brothers were going to sell Joseph into slavery and desired to kill him, but God turned it around to fulfill His purpose and plan for Joseph’s life. If you would like to know more about Joseph and his family (or need a refresher), read Genesis 35 through chapter 50 for context.
If someone has hurt you, trust in God’s sovereignty to work things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Many times we are harmed or spoken negatively about by a person (or many people) and want to take revenge. But God might be using the situation to open our eyes, draw us nearer to Him, or bring a larger plan to pass. During times of persecution, we are to stay true to being a Christian, endure with faithfulness to God and praise Him through the storm. This verse reminds me of Haman, when he created a pole to kill Mordecai, but little did he know he was planning his own funeral (please read the book of Esther, if you’re not familiar with this story). As the song in kreyol says, “Djab la te fouye tou a pou mwen, men se li menm ki tonbe ladan!!” When others are persecuting us, they don’t realize they’re digging a pit for themselves. Because just like an earthly mother and father get protective of their children, so does our Father in Heaven when we (His children) are being attacked. (Let’s just be sure that we are not the ones doing the persecuting #selfcheck).
It’s amazing how all we need to do is remain silent (Exodus 14:14), trust in God’s faithfulness and obey Him, and we will see our enemies fall before our eyes (Psalm 91:7-11). What can we gather from all of this? That whatever you’re going through, your testimony will serve as a means to help and save others, once you’re delivered. Also, God’s children are victorious no matter the form of the attack – to God be the glory!
Dear Father, thank You for Your sovereignty. Thank You that even when I am dealing with persecution Your hand is ready to rescue me. Help me to keep my focus on You during trials, and to learn whatever lesson it is that You are trying to teach me. May I be at rest through difficult times as Peter when he was chained to guards in prison, knowing You will deliver me in due time. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
