1 John 3

Highlight – “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.” (v.1)

How blessed are we to be called the children of God? Through the belief and confession that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Galatians 3:26; John 1:12-13), we were given the privilege to become His children.

God is faithful to keep His covenant and love towards those who not only love Him but keep His commandments (Psalm 25:10; Deuteronomy 7:9). In Deuteronomy 7:9, we see that when we obey Him, the benefit is not only for us, but for thousands of generations to come. Who wouldn’t want that for themselves and their posterity?! God proves His love for His children and blesses us in such a way that our blessings flow onto others (Genesis 12:2; 2 Cor 8:9).

We show God our love for Him when we do as He asks us to. If you aren’t sure whether you’re living within God’s will for you, please search for better understanding in His Word and commune with Him in prayer. The Bible is our instruction manual on how to live a godly life from the breath of God Himself (2 Tim 3:16). I would suggest reading Romans 1:18-32 to get you started. Paul explains in these verses that there are those who know the truth of God, but choose to reject it, giving in to the desires of the flesh described in verses 29-32 – this is how we shouldn’t act (please also read Ephesians 4:17-32 to understand how to lead a Christian life). The simplest way to know whether we’re following His commands and if we truly love Him is found in Matthew 22:36-40, John 14:21, 1 John 3:23-24, and 1 John 4:20-21. The reference verses I’ve provided are the foundation that will lead you into the right direction as far as what God desires of His children.

I know I’ve provided a lot of Scripture in this devotion, but I think it’s crucial that we understand in order to receive His divine blessings, we must obey Him. His divine blessings are given to His children, who not only believe in His Son, but follow His commands.

Dear God, forgive me for all my sins. Thank You for removing me from the world and calling me Your child. Please help me to be consistent in reading my Bible by meditating on the Word day and night. Father, I want to obey You in everything. I want to apply Your Word to my life so that I may continue maturing in Jesus Christ. May I truly mean it when I say “I love You” by my demonstration of love to others. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
