Romans 12:18 – 21

Highlighting –  “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.” (v. 18)

Jesus was the best and only example to follow when it comes to being at peace with all men and not allowing the attacks of men to affect Him. Despite the religious leaders rejecting Him and aiming to destroy Him, Jesus Christ stayed focused on the mission at hand – gaining souls for the Kingdom of God (John 6:37 – 38). May we follow His lead. Jesus was the same perfect and sinless Man who the crowd declared be crucified instead of Barabbas, a criminal (Matthew 27:16-26). When we look at Jesus, we should aim to be at peace with all people, in all circumstances.

In today’s text, Paul encourages us to continue to be good, even to our enemies (as Jesus was with Judas). We are to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). Additionally, we read in Luke 6:27 – 28, we are to love our enemies and bless those who curse us. For what reward is there in loving those who love you? Even sinners love those who love them (Luke 6:32). I pray we strive to be different than the world in our love for everyone, even in persecution.

What does this mean practically for us? When we’re being attacked by someone, we must respond in a manner that displays God’s love to them. I know it’s easier said than done, but in this way, we can turn them to Him (Matthew 5:16). This principle should be carried into the home, church, or wherever you go. You can’t be one with God if you’re not in harmony with your brothers and sisters in Christ – picture the cross. Christianity is a horizontal and vertical relationship. As it says in Hebrews 12:14, “Pursue peace with all men, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”

Dear Father, help me to grow to be more like Jesus Christ every single day by dying to the flesh. Satan is so powerful in his mission to cause disruption but thank You for the victory You have given me on Calvary, I will not be shaken. Help me to not retaliate when I’m being attacked, but to be still and let You fight for me. May I love those who hate me and be at peace with all men so they may see Your light shining through me. Help me to be a true ambassador for Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
