Highlighting – “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’” (v.14-15)
I believe there are two messages in this passage.
How often do we go to sleep at night and know we’ll wake up the next day without a second thought? So often we forget tomorrow is not promised (Proverbs 27:1). With that said, we have a saying in Kreyol “mache tou sove”, which basically means, live a saved life always (Philippians 2:12). Once we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior into our hearts, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit and must die to the flesh daily, living a new life in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:13-14). We live as Christ did when we follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit and bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). These verses encourage us to not boast about tomorrow, because we can’t foresee what will happen. But if it’s the Lord’s will, our plans will come to pass.
Secondly, we should seek out the will of God for our lives. At times, we make plans not knowing if it is God’s will (Proverbs 16:9). Now depending on the situation, some decisions you can make in alignment with God’s will according to what you’ve read on the subject in Scripture. But for anything that may not be explicitly said in the Word, prayer and waiting to hear from Him is crucial (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Ask yourself, if I make this decision, will it glorify God? We prove to be the children of God when our driving force is to do His will, as Jesus did when He was on earth (Luke 22:42), all for His glory. When we are in a relationship with God, it is linked with the desire to do His will, which is marked by obeying Him (1 Peter 4:2). As much as we seek to please our family members whom we love, we would aim to do the same for the Almighty God, IF we love Him (John 14:15). How many of you want to do the will of God? May we ask Him to show us His ways (Psalm 143:10). As Jesus desired to do His Father’s will so much that it filled Him up, I pray we get to this point (John 4:34; Psalm 40:8) – if you’re not already there.
By the power of the Holy Spirit working through us, let’s strive to be more like Christ every day and follow His commands. We live for Him and will naturally want to do His will the more we read the Word and communicate with Him in prayer. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever (1 John 2:17). What an awesome and eternal promise!
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your only Son to die on the cross for me so that I may receive eternal life with you. Help me to live as Christ did every day and put my faith in Him, knowing tomorrow is not promised. As Your Son, I desire to do Your will. Please help me to surrender my life to You completely and follow Your commands, as my love for You is demonstrated through my obedience to You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
