Hebrews 12:4 – 13

Highlighting – “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His Son.” (v.5b – 6)

I love this passage.

We are often upset when our parents try to correct us, believing they’re just trying to control our lives. But over time, we come to appreciate their counsel and discipline to realize they were guiding us in the right direction. When we stop to consider what they’re saying, they truly only have our best interest at heart. God acts the same way with His children. When we begin to go down the path of destruction, He sends warnings and rings alarms in our spirit to grab our attention. If we don’t heed those warnings, He will discipline us to bring us back to Him. Please understand, even in God’s discipline towards us, He is still very much a loving God because He is not allowing us to remain on the path that will destroy us. Our Father will do everything He can to save us, but it’s up to us whether or not we’ll follow Him.

Additionally, discipline from our Father strengthens us, builds our character, and molds us into the type of God-fearing people He wants us to be. As our parents and our Father in Heaven, if we love our brothers and sisters in Christ, we will correct them when they’re going down the wrong path (Proverbs 27:5 – 6). Love is tender, gentle, sweet, patient but also, tough and caring enough to reproof.

Appreciate correction and discipline from the Lord. You’ll reap the blessings if you endure in total surrender to Him. Trust me, it’s worth it in the end. Once you see where you’ve come from, you’ll never want to go back. Even further, you’ll never want to focus on anything else but Him for the rest of your life (Psalm 91:14 – 16)!

Dear Father, I’m grateful to be called a child of Yours. Thank You for loving me so much that You will not let me go astray. I love You for who You are and for saving me from the wiles of the devil. Help me to be sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. God, change my heart so that I not only hear when the Holy Spirit speaks, but that I’m also obedient. It’s one thing to hear Your voice and another to do what You say. Thank You for never letting me go. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
