2 Chronicles 1:1 – 17
Highlighting – “Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.” (v.10 – 12)
If God told you to ask Him for anything you wish and He’d grant it to you, what is the first thing that comes to mind as a request? Is it material? Is it a spiritually based request? Here we see there was much blessing in Solomon’s answer, he requested wisdom and knowledge from God to lead His people. What a selfless request. He literally could have asked for ANYTHING.
When we consider eternity, this is the same mindset that we are to have. We should desire from God to grow in wisdom, discernment, knowledge of Him and request to be equipped to spread the gospel, as this is the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19 – 20). As it says in Matthew 6:33, “but seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (NIV). The Lord did exactly that for Solomon. Solomon requested wisdom as he realized he was ill equipped to lead God’s people, so God granted His heart’s desire and gave him wealth on top of that. Our God is a God of abundance and gives us more than we ask for (Ephesians 3:20 – 21). He’s willing to do the same for us today as He did for Solomon, if we would just seek to make Him a priority in our lives. God was so delighted with Solomon’s request that he not only was the wisest king that ever existed, but also the richest.
God took great delight in the fact that Solomon wanted to lead His people, as God would see fit. He sought the betterment of the people before himself, which is how we are to act towards one another (Philippians 2:3). May we learn from Solomon the importance in wisdom, it’s lasting effects, compared to the material requests we make daily. I consider something wise my friend said the other day, if you don’t have wisdom, how can you maintain or manage the material possessions God blesses you with? #FoodForThought
Father, may I always delight in You and seek things from above. To fear You is the beginning of wisdom…help me to truly revere You. You are the same God yesterday, today and tomorrow. For that reason, I know if I ask You for wisdom, as it says in James 1 verse 5 You will give it to me, and that’s a promise. Please fill me with Your wisdom so that I know how to live this life, how to counsel my friends, and so that I may know how to manage and maintain the blessings You’ve given me. In Jesus name I pray, amen!
