1 Samuel 15:22b, “…to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (NIV)

God inspired my Pastor and father, that the verse for our church to focus on this year is 1 Samuel 15:22b, “…to obey is better than sacrifice…” Samuel exhorted Saul to keep in mind, what all believers need to as well, that obedience to God is better than all the sacrifices we can offer up to Him. Think about it, we render our sacrifice void if we’re walking in disobedience to God. For example, 1 Corinthians 13:1 says, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal”. Jesus told us the greatest commandment, which is to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul, and love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). So, when we don’t have love in our hearts for God and others, and yet offer up a sacrifice of worship in church, it doesn’t sound harmonious to God, but like noise. It doesn’t matter how much we believe we are sacrificing for God or the advancement of His Kingdom, if we’re not obeying His Word and commands. Today, lets challenge ourselves to obey God no matter what. We must trust that He will provide and guide where He sends us. He is all-knowing, all-seeing, and the all-powerful God. We must let go and put our full confidence in Him, even in opposition, knowing that He never fails.

As Charles Stanley often says, “Obey God and leave the consequences to Him” – that’s bold obedience.

Dear God, You are my refuge. Help me to release control and surrender to Your Spirit at work in me. Help me to grow in obedience to You beginning with the small things. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
