1 Corinthians 1:10, “I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” (NLT)
Let’s get back to basics. We are often so engulfed in our personal agendas in attending church that we forget the foundation of the Universal Church, unity in Jesus Christ. Psalm 133:1 says, “How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” In reference to all saints, God is pleased when we are in harmony with one another. (Please read the entire psalm, it only has 3 verses.) Today’s devotion is about unity in prayer and fasting.
Look at Matthew 18:19. Jesus tells us if two of us agree in what we ask for, God will do it for us. This is a promise from God, and God is not man that He should lie. We see the need for unity in the request being made. The verse specifically states, “…if two of you on the earth agree about anything you ask for…” It has to be true and pure agreement. God is a God of unity and the devil knows that if he could just cause division between two people that agree, then we won’t see the blessing God has in store for us. But praise God for giving us His Word to show us how to live and recognize the schemes of the enemy. When fasting with others, it’s always good to ask God forgiveness for known and unknown sins, this is your personal task before fasting to ensure your prayers are heard by God as an individual. The next step would be to ensure everyone is aware of the same general or specific request to bring before God…we are powerful when we unite in prayer!
There’s more I’d like to mention, but I think this is sufficient for now. May we be truly in one accord when fasting and praying together.
Dear Father, we know that the prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective. How much more so when two or three righteous people are praying together. May we not be like Israel who was fasting in the desert, but You did not hear them because of their sin. Purify our hearts to be inclined towards You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
