Matthew 6:1-4

Highlighting – “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” (v. 2)

What is arrogant religion? It is full of pride and an outward display of piety to be seen and honored by others, rather than to glorify God, and advance His Kingdom. Arrogant religion, exalts self in good deeds, as opposed to God, who works in us to desire to do good deeds (Philippians 2:13). God desires that we would give out of pure motives. This is why Jesus, during His ministry, advises Christians to give and not allow the right hand to know what the left hand is doing (Matthew 6:3-4). As human beings, we naturally desire the accolades of men, yet as a Christian you learn that this should not be our aim. Our aim should be to glorify God in everything we do (Colossians 3:17).

In Acts 5:1-10, God used Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, as an example of what it looks like when someone doesn’t give with pure motives. Peter asked Ananias, why did he allow the devil to influence his lies to the Holy Spirit. This passage is a reminder that God sees our hearts, while we may fool others, we cannot fool God. If we give, lets give honestly, and humbly.

During this holiday season, ask God to help you give with the right heart. When you reflect on your day and your decisions, ask yourself, what was your intention behind your decisions and be honest with yourself. God desires to renew our hearts and transform our minds to be more like Him. All we have to do is submit our will to Him, and allow Him to work on us. The Gospel in action is sincere, lets pray for sincerity of heart.

Dear Father, thank You for revelation of Your Word. The more I read it, the more I understand what it means to be like You. Please help me to die to my flesh daily, and live in Your Spirit. Check the motives of my heart, and make them pure. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
